My brother just gifted me a Stelling Foggy Mtn with a very low serial number ((one of the first five of thirty). I know a little bit of the history of this model, but I'm just wondering the approximate value of this instrument. It appears to be in excellent shape. Any help is much appreciated.

The Stelling that I have played was very even and matched from string to string with strong volume and a pleasing tone. These qualities together on a single instrument are rare on banjos (and probably common to any Stelling).
The monetary value is swamped by the playability of that instrument.

Very rare. I have seen them around $2K. I know they didn't have the Stelling tone ring, but I don't know if they used a hoop or if it is a woody. If you Google it, you'll see one that was for sale for $2K on FB and another discussion about them. Geoff Hohwald at Banjo Warehouse is a Stelling expert and, if you're interested, always a willing buyer.

I own three of the Foggys - all in different configurations - but they all share a blonde finish, a very simple inlay and peghead shape and a simple wedge-fit brass rod tonering. They’re really cool banjos and Geoff didn’t make many before switching over to the even more rare White Dove model. Finally they can be had for less than $2000 and top out at around that. I think these models still suffer from the issues that made them a tough sell for maker and buyer in the early 1990s - why not just get a ‘real’ Stelling with a full tonering? Kind of the same philosophy where you don’t see many pros playing a hoop banjo…even Earl wanted that Granada after the RB-11!
