Private messaging has so far been an inscrutable process for me. I never see a notice on the site that I've received a message, yet I'll get emails telling me that someone has messaged me. Those messages contain a copy of the message. This seems odd to me. Someone shed some light on this, please. Bob Russell, puzzled picker

The BHO message system is basically external to the site and uses regular email The private message stuff you go through to send on is there to make sure it’s sent by a member. Only a notice appears on site, and it lapses in 15 minutes, with the PM notice sent to your email. After the first message, further exchanges go by regular email—including replies to your messages.

To add to what Bill said: you will find a notice at the top of the page if you are on the Hangout when a PM is sent to you. If not, then it goes to your e-mail. The PM is not saved on the Hangout. If you want to save it, you must either click on "send me an e-mail" or save it when you receive the e-mail.
