I have a five part banjo version of Little Rabbit Where's Your Mammy (original source unknown) taught by Steve Rosen. My wife is being taught a three part fiddle version (from Crockett's Kentucky Mountaineers) by Erynn Marshall. The tunes are very different and sound like two entirely different tunes despite having the same title. I am trying to figure out if anyone has any information that might shed some light on these tunes, history etc. Also, what version do you commonly encounter in jams? Thanks.

The 5 part is played in the key of A. The mountaineers are playing the same tune but they are messing around with the 5 parts, dropping, adding back in, different sequences. banjered

I've always considered that a medley of two tunes: "Little Rabbit" and "Rabbit Where's Your Mammy?" I concur with Banjered as to key, and thus tuning -- A or G capo II.

This version of “Rabbit, Where’s Your Mammy” sounds like a different tune to my ear. Note that this rabbit is not said to be “little.”

According to Traditional Tune Archive tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:Little_Rabbit  "Most modern versions are based on the Crockett Mountaineers' recording of "Little Rabbit," which is actually a pastiche of two or more tunes, including "Little Rabbit" (similar to versions of the "John Brown's Dream" tune family) {'A', 'B' and 'C' parts}and "Rabbit Where's Your Mammy? (1)" {'D' and 'E' parts}". The link also give notation (for fiddle) of all five parts.

Traditional Tune Archive also lists another version of Rabbit Where's your Mammy (tunearch.org/wiki/Rabbit_Where...Mammy%3F_(3)) in D

I made of video playing this three finger style fifteen years ago, with all five parts. It's not going to help much working it up in clawhammer, but it might give you some ideas. I really love this tune.

If anyone is interested, I have posted the tab, with all five parts, on my webpage.
