Sound normal, fabric shoes are around 80-200 and decent leather work boots are about twice that.

All our accounts are joint accounts, so I can't [won't??] comment on the "good husband" part, and though it's been a few years, $166 doesn't strike me as being too far off the going rate [i.e what the market will bear]. I hope she doesn't need custom orthotics on top of ^^ .... my last pair [during the pandemic] was $250 Cdn. ... I've checked once a couple of years ago and they were $600. ![]()
Edit: I don't blame you for living in the '70s....

I go through a pair of running shoes every three months. Actually, 6 months because I buy two pairs at a time and alternate them each day.
The current brand and model I was using went from $78 to $149 in the last 6 months.
So, yeah, this is where we are at now.

That's not bad price for a decent woman's shoes. I've priced some casual type canvas shoes that are over $100. I usually try to look for shoe sales and hope I can find something to fit my small, narrow foot. Most all shoes (women's at least) are either medium or wide and from about 8 to 11 in size. None of that would work for me, a 7N. The smaller the shoe, the more expensive it is. Weird.

I hear you! Shoes are stupid expensive but cheap ones make my feet hurt. I will pay the price.

The cheap ones aren't just uncomfortable.... they tend not to last.
I like boat mocs. I'm in them just about any time there isn't snow on the ground, and also in them inside when there IS snow on the ground.
I used to get them from LL Bean. Decent quality, considerably less expensive than Topsiders, Sebagos, and the like.
But their quality went to hell, as did that of many LL Bean products. They were failing at six months. I could have just done the warranty dance with them, but it's not like you can just go to the store and swap them out.
Now I buy the good ones and typically get two to three years out of a pair.

Yeah ... been running for 50+ years, so I've seen the price of good New Balance shoes go from $28.00 in 1980 to $170.00 now. I ran the Boston Marathon in them in '81and now, at the age of 72, I still pound the pavement in them.

I ran my first marathon in the original Nike Pegasus in 1983. Those were in the $30 range back then. I’ve spent as much as $350 for competitive running shoes. But they have lasted FAR longer than I ever expected, going well over 2500 miles and still going. I usually get 500-600 miles out of a $160 pair of running shoes.
Cool to see other marathon runners here! I’ve ran 47 of them over the last 50+ years. But it’s just short stuff these days. I’m getting too old and tired for all that long stuff.

I bought an expensive Allen Edmonds moc loafer 20 years ago because they did have wide versions. They fell apart in well under a year. I called the USA office to complain hoping for a refund or a replacement. They were actually arrogant and rude. Never bought another one their shoes. Brad. Brand ain’t everything, IMHO. In fact have not spent that much on a shoe since. Brad

I grew up in a shoe store…….literally!!! Most shoes today are junk. I find it crazy to pay $80 -$160 for tennis/sneakers/walking shoes, but that’s what you have to pay to get anything fairly decent, and even in that price range you are not guaranteed a decent footbed , or any footbed for that matter.
Best footbeds in a shoe are IMO , Birkenstock, Crocs, Orthofeet, ASICS, certain Sketchers , Redwings.
Hell, a good pair of inserts is not cheap either, but they can certainly help a pair of shoes you like without having to search.
I buy all my shoes online through sites that have free delivery and returns.
It’s not like going to the shoe store of old, and getting sized, fitted and trying on and coming back for a stretching or padding up of a shoe for proper fit, but it works for me.
Did you know……..I’m a pretty good judge of people just by looking at their shoes!!!

Treat your female's feet as if they were something worth having for the rest of your life. The elephants at the Portland, Oregon Zoo get Danner's.

Women seem to get a raw deal. My friend's wife is short and solid , or she was 30 years ago. She told me that her system of buying a shirt or a pair of slacks was to select from a women's wear store. Then she would go to a men's and boy's department and find the exact same pattern and style at usually 30%- 40% off.

she was on the new balance program for several years then went into skechers for the last 2 or 3 now ...well her son bought a pair of a brand called HOKA and just raves about then so she tried them on and liked them so there ya go. but the skechers and new balance had kept on creeping up where they were 100 to 135 bucks which i thought was silly high. she is in the medical profession and on her feets a lot.

If you have a local Sketchers store, don’t overlook the last years models/sales/returns/NOS shelves, usually near the back of the store. I’ve found last years $160 type models there for $29.

As a work boot wearing individual for the past 50 yrs I would highly recommend the "made in USA" line of boots from Thourogood boots .
I've basically tried them all and these are the best fitting, longest wearing, comfortable boots, hands down.
I'm on about 3 yrs with my current pair
About $275.00
Good luck
