Left for Illinois to visits my wife’s family on Thursday and planning on staying till Wednesday.
Came home early (today) due to the pending blizzard that we are right in the heart of in a few hours. Not looking good and although we have snow up to our arse already and still 30” inches of ice on da lake , we are supposed to get 30” to 40” inches of snow with 25-35 mph winds with gusts up to 50 in the next 48 hrs.
We got 9 heavy inches yesterday and it’s hard to move, I can’t wait for this next blast!!!

The light's still there!!   [The tunnel's just full of snow and ya can't see it.  cheeky ]

Nevertheless, stay safe  .... though it's sounds plenty unpleasant, this too shall pass.*

* and that empties my philosophy tank .... at least until tomorrow.

It's one thing to have gusts to 40 or peak once or twice at 50mph.
But if we're gonna have 60-70-80mph winds all summer, I guess I gotta build a cave.

Bummer....

I feel your pain. We just got rid of pretty much the last of the blizzard here in southern Noo Wingland - at least, of the snow. The tree damage will take months more to clean up. Have had enough winter for this year, thank you very much.

Hope you and yours can hunker down joyfully and that this incoming storm is as uneventful for you as possible.

Expecting hail and tornados tomorrow.

Well, got a good dusting (aka Yooper Blizzard) of at least 28-30 inches and supposed to get another foot today with 35 mph winds and gusts up to 60mph. Running out of room to push snow. We still have power so we’ve got that going for us. Travel is non existent other than snowmobile. Mine s on the trailer and completely covered and buried in snow!!!
Biggest concerns now are losing power, the drifting of snow, and what to eat next!!!

The road commission just pulled all plows and road crews off roads until further notice. Unable to move or see and not safe. If any emergency, 911, and a plow will be sent with emergency vehicle. Gettin bad!!!

Nopix - Posted - 03/16/2026:  08:34:48

We had that overnight. Lo of 6F. Wind chill like 50 something below.
2 inches of snow gets three foot drifts here.
They say 60s by Wed!

Buddur - Posted - 03/16/2026:  13:38:00

Love to have all that snow down here for one last Winter blast.

And all I have are trees down to cut up from all the wind we had in the past handfull of days.

Wow!  That's extreme.  Dale you would shake your head to,see how the U.K. grinds to a halt with just a few inches of snow - it would be carnage here if we had half of what you are getting.

75 mph gusts here last night
Starting to snow now
Wind is supposed to start up again tonight
Rather have the snow
The strong wind is not my friend.
Good luck Dale

Tornado missed me last night. An area a bit NE of me was hit, but I don't yet know how bad. Hopefully it mostly hit a wooded area.

slammer - Posted - 03/17/2026:  05:39:15

Well, the wind let up and we have visibility again. Roads are still closed and we received at least 30+ inches of snow, not including all the damn drifting!!! Plows are back out and trying to open main roads. We are on a strict no travel advisory and couldn’t go anywhere even if you had to.
Good news is………the coffee is hot, the heat is on, we never lost power ( which I believe is a miracle ) with all the trees down, tons of food in the house and the snowblower and 4 wheeler with plow had no breakdowns and performed like champs!!! Life is OK !!!

Why not hang a salt block about 40 inches from the ground?
Then, when the snow gets so bad that you're low on groceries, and not allowed to travel, shoot whatever looks like it's out there, STEALING your salt!
(If you can't travel, neither can the game wardens.)

Apparently this is just recently in Wisconsin.   facebook.com/reel/1572136421583946  The caption is: "It's nice to have good neighbors."

[And I might add.... especially if/when they have a tractor like ^^ that!!  yes ]

That a tractor and a 1/2 !!! We could use that up here. An hour north of here in Ishpeming, it is just ridiculous and I feel for the people that live there.
I have two buddies who are stranded at camp. They have heat, melted snow for water, minimal food and 2 beers left. I’m thinking only one of em is coming out of this !!! You know it’s bad when snowmobiles are useless in this deep snow!!!

I lived in Hartford and NYC and therabouts a year or 2 on the West coast and a yar or so in ATlanta until I was about 34. I return to Hartford and they had blizzard in May. I went UHall go a truck, put my scant belonging in it, and drove the truck to Florida. I have not seen snow here in Florida except thanksgiving day 1982, except when visiting Northern places.

Growing up in New England, I always heard it said snow etc builds character. The truth is it makes one a character,

Of course, down here in Sunny Florida where I have lived more than 40 years, we have tornados, hurricanes, we have a million or two alligators, about 10k Crocodiles, Burmese Pythons, and lately monster sized wild boars from BelaRussia that hunters have illegally imported to mix with the local wild pigs.,

But I enjoyed for years while I still had family up in Hartford, calling folks who reported snow and telling them I was going to the beach,

It wouldn't be carnage. We'd spend as much as they do on snowploughs and such like. The reality is that our weather is so mild that paying to avoid the occasional shutdown would be a false economy. We do, after all, live in a country where people getting stranded in a rural pub by a blizzard every few years makes the national news.

banjoy - Posted - 03/18/2026:  05:16:10

Pretty extreme. I don't know how often this is a thing for you, but your photo of all that snow piled against your glass doors was alarming to me. That's a lot of pressure on that glass. Maybe consider at least shoveling that away from your glass? Would be more than rough if that snow breaks on through...

Owen - Posted - 03/18/2026:  06:26:29

My take is that the pressure from the drifted snow is pretty much all weight ... horizontal pressure would be negligible.   When doors that open inward are opened after ^^ storms, the snow normally doesn't fall inward.   YMMV??

[Having said that, current plans here are to fire up the snowblower today.  Accumulation is nothing like Slammers .... although there is one short drift across the path between house and shop, it's mostly just to "tidy up" after having done hand clearing from a couple of minor amounts of snow over the last several weeks.]

We got 4-5" of snow in one fell swoop late Monday afternoon. Just before that I went into town to get meds and tissues for my two sick kids only to have a bear of a time getting home on the slippery roads. I was about 2 miles from my home, and that last stretch has turns/hills I didn't want to attempt, and I was sliding so much that I decided to pull into the Township building parking lot and wait for a plow/salt truck to do the road. It was almost an hour when the DOT plow/salt truck made it's presence...so I decided to take my chances. Well....just up the road there were 4 cars that slid off the side and down the same embankment. I know I woulda slid off the road too if I didn't make the executive decision to stop driving when I did.

I made it home safe and sound...white knuckles and all.

My roads are still not plowed out. Side roads and country roads are impassable. There are a lot of people that are in trouble. Last estimate was 34.5 inches of snow. Luckily the high winds kept most of it off roofs.
Some roads have 9-13 foot drifts. Have only seen pictures, but it’s impressive and scary at the same time!!!

wow ! we didn't get any snow but we got a lot of wind... no tornado in our area but straight lines were a beast... it came in the back of our barn and blew upward and blew the tin roof inside out like an explosion inside the barn .. never had that happen before.
now gotta get somebody out there to fix the dang roof... galvanized roof has nearly tripled since i put that one on.
