I am interested in buying a Huber neck for my 2015-2016 Huber VRB3

I have talked to Benny at Huber Banjo.
Just wondered if anyone might know of one laying around.

Barry,
I am a banjo luthier in North Carolina.
Have you decided that the Huber neck can't be repaired to suit you?
We have glued back several necks with hot hide glue and did refinish touch up and most are usually invisible after repair and they are stronger than before.
Can you send pics of the broken area if you haven't already sent it to someone else for work to be done?

I’m really surprised Huber banjos don’t have at least one or two extra necks with various inlays in stock on the shelf . If for no other reason than times like these.

I had a luthier examine my neck. He said that while it was possible to glue the headstock back on, there was no guarantee it would hold. He showed me several examples of headstocks glued back on. I would not be happy. So I will have the neck replaced. Thanks for BHO member’s comments.

Have to say I've seen plenty of photos of headstock repairs that looked fantastic. And the glued-on headstock is sometimes stronger than the original.

Also have to say I recently bought a repaired RB250 neck in Hangout Classifieds from Ceres Banjo Works. It was advertised as having been repaired at Huber. The repair was hidden by spraying the whole neck in a tinted lacquer that changed the color. No problem. I don't have a matching resonator anyway.

And also have to say, in the past few weeks, the repair has become visible! Finish seems to have sunk into the seam. As far as I can tell, it's reached the full length it's going to, so in the next week or two I'm going to touch it up with GluBoost and see how it goes.

This experience would not keep me from buying another repaired neck.

Barry: I strongly suggest you consider having the neck repaired, if not for your own use then to give you something valuable to sell. Based on the Ceres prices of Huber-repaired Gibson necks, I believe you could sell a professionally repaired Huber neck for $800-$900.

If you don't take Don up on his offer to look at the broken neck, perhaps ask what Huber would charge to repair it. The revenue from selling the repaired neck could offset a big part of a new neck.

Don is also one of several folks who could build you a new neck.

Gibson guitar headstocks are notorious for breaking. Good techs often glue the break, then graft new wood into the crack area by routing out affected wood and installing well-fitted plugs.

I saw a video by Ted Woodford where he did this repair to a very bad break, and the repair was very strong and basically invisible. Anything can be repaired if the tech is good.

Long story short, a good luthier can make a very good repair. Whether to proceed is up to the customer.
