I always thought that selling stolen property was illegal whether or not you were aware of the item’s history? The dealership may have followed good business practices, but in the end they still were part of the deception. ??

Makes me wonder how many instruments sold to places like Guitar Center, are stolen? There has been times, when I’m there, shading looking folks are trying to sell instruments. The coppers better not come looking for my beloved Sierra!

This is an AI overview of the situation in Canada:

It is generally not a crime to sell stolen property if you genuinely did not know, and had no reasonable way of suspecting, that the item was stolen. The law typically requires the prosecution to prove you had knowledge or were "willfully blind" to the item's illicit origin

Onto a tangent, I dunno just what I'd do IF I discovered I had a counterfeit doh-rey-me in my wallet and didn't know where I got it.

What about Title Theft? The mortgage lender has obligation to verify ownership of home before lending. Yet there is an entire industry built around protecting the home owner.

"Pathak said its investigation found the dealership didn’t know the vehicle was stolen and was not in the wrong."

The buyer didn't know either, so they're not in the wrong.

Update ..... apparently the buyer got his $40,000 refunded.  globalnews.ca/news/11742969/al...g-stolen/
