United says hard case only, for a carry on banjo. My Access case is well padded and pretty stiff.
I need the shoulder straps of the case since I need a cane to walk.
The other option is rim in a suit case, neck in a tube or bubble wrapped.
Anyone flown United with this style case?

Read this if you haven't already.

Flying with a soft case is risky. Unless you're flying business class or have perks that ensure you'll board early, there's always a chance your banjo will require gate checking. Additionally, some of the newer overhead bins are plenty deep but insufficiently long to accommodate a banjo case, hard or soft.

The flight crews may take pity on you and stash your banjo in a coat closet, but that's not guaranteed. If your soft case ends up with the rest of the checked baggage, all manner of nasty things could happen to it.

And it doesn't matter which airline you're flying.
