something I have pondered lately is that the fingers are all simple hinge joints -moving in one direction-- except where they meet the knuckle -those have a bit of side to side--control of interacting with the strings --is done --by how much they are coiled or raised-- also in a forward roll we say index middle --but the rest of the hand is seeing it as simply leaning into an application of pressure (one movement,not 2}

for me resting my hand and bending my picks a certain way helps certain movements --but ruins others--I think talent still comes into play also

One thing that strikes me (and players, please do not hesitate to correct me) is the similarity of the right and left hands of Little Roy, Earl, Ralph and I think Sonny, is that they are all cupped and with fingers curled and arched and all have minimum of movement and great tone.

Yes, I believe picking the strings with some upward movement creates good tone, hence the curled fingers,, and also with motion from the big knuckle along with the 2 on the finger. However, if you watch Banjo Ben' Clark's fingers he uses mostly the 2 on the finger.... go figure
