Planning on doing a few of the OT Banjo category contests this summer…just for fun.
If you were to pick two tunes to play at a OT contest /Fiddle Conventiin what would they be?

Old Joe Clark and Turkey in the Straw. I’m comfortable with them and they ate in different keys and tunings.

I've judged the Goleta Fiddle festival for the last decade, and I look for tunes that maybe aren't considered "contest tunes" per se, and always pay special attention to players who play in index lead, 2 FTL or three finger instead of downstroke style. OT banjo encompasses such a diversity of styles and tunes/songs, and I look for what someone does a *little* different with a tune or playing style... feel a lot of players slip into the standards, and you'd really better nail it to get my attention as a judge since I'm real familiar with how those tunes were played by the old guys and that's a tough metric to play up to. My two cents.

Thanks for the insight! I’ve been to a bunch of contests as a spectator but, never “competed”.
It’s good to get an opinion from a judge as my tastes are pretty eclectic and have been drawn toward Fretless, gourd, and the older finger style techniques.
With the majority of folks playing standards with a downstroke style, I think I’ll try some tunes local to the area of the contests in 2f TL.
