Hi! I started taking clawhammer style lessons in September and now I am moving from North Carolina where I know tons of teachers to Houston, Texas. I want to take in person lesson. Does anyone know of any clawhammer style banjo teachers in Houston? I am open to bluegrass style as well but want to get a bit better with clawhammer first. Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi Tina,
I've been living in Houston for 20 years as a banjo player and I could count the number of local banjo players I've met on my hands. Not a huge banjo town. I can perhaps give you a few leads, though.

Fullers Guitar is a music shop on the north side of Houston and they manage lessons for a few different instruments, but they also usually have a pretty nice selection of resonator and open back banjos on the wall, both new and vintage. Those guys would likely know of local banjo teachers, probably bluegrass though.

Rockin Robin, same as above, but way less banjos, maybe two or three at most, but they do more guitar lessons, so perhaps someone may know someone.

An acquaintance of mine with a public Instagram account of cajunbanjo used to give lessons, I believe, but I am not sure if he still does. Geoffrey is a very nice guy, though, and he would definitely reply with any advice he had if you send him a message on Instagram.

Good luck and welcome to Houston! Feel free to DM me for any Houston related info you might need or want.

David

I might recommend reaching out to the Houston Folk Music Society, surely they know somebody in the area teaching clawhammer. Probably good to connect with anyhow. If they can't help, you could reach further down the road to the Austin Friends of Traditional Music (they also have an excellent festival). And, if you do end up interested in bluegrass, I'd recommend catching up with Chris Hirsch and the Bay Area Bluegrass Association.

look on the Hangout's directory of banjoists. I have found teachers etc there both in Miami and now here in W Palm the two places I have lived the two places I have lived since I took up the banjo to take lessons. Do not be shy banjoiss of all stripes are interested in recruiting more banjoists and getting people to learn. Check out whatever old time music performances and ask around about banjo teachers. There is a directory of teachers and such by region here on the hang out as well. Good luck!
