Hey all,

I've been playing an MB200 for years now. I play mostly bluegrass but also clawhammer. I can say the MB200 sounds bad for clawhammer tunes but pretty decent for bluegrass. But, I don't like the neck and have found that basically every other banjo I've played has better tone and playability.

I'd love a Gold Tone OB150, but the near $2k (CAD) price tag is a little out of reach.

Is a Gold Tone CC100R or a Deering Goodtime 2 a worthy step up from the Epiphone in your opinion? I've played both and like both, but I don't want to be wishing for a new banjo in the near future.

Thank you!

Get a banjo that is lightly used, built domestically and has a brass/bronze tone ring that is rolled or cast.

Are there any reasonable priced Canadian made banjos that might come up fairly often in the used market?

In the UK???  "Fairly often" sounds ambitious; the used banjo market in the UK/EU is tiny.

Most any recent banjo (~40yrs) made in the Americas or UK/EU by known makers is desirable, get what you can.

Apologies, banjo-d's profile is an empty shell and does not indicate a location.  If banjo-d is in Canada, he/she still has access to everything in the US too.  I think that the tariffs are more reasonable from US->Canada.

If a Romero shows up, oh yeah want it, but, probably too expensive.  There are several boutique makers in Canada that are all very good and more affordable, so I have read.  Bill Rickard is the standard and makes an excellent banjo at a fair price, I am keeping mine.

Realistically, a good step up, on a budget, from a MB200 is pretty easy depending on a persons leanings, especially considering the used market right now.
