Hey,
Apologies if this is a beginner question, but I’ve been working through a lovely version of “Lazy John” and while it seems to be in G tuning, I can’t quite get it to sound right. I’m wondering if there’s something different going on with her banjo tuning? Would anyone with a more experienced ear be able to shed some light?

Oh wait, I think I just worked out that the 2nd string is tuned up to a C. I guess this is a modal tuning.

The tuning is Double C (gCGCD) and they are playing in the key of C. You were close with guessing the G modal tuning--just need to lower the 4th string to a C as well as raise the second string to a C.

I still prefer plain ol' G tuning. Simple, nice slide on the third string, but hey, they sound great doing it to it their own way! banjered

Thanks for posting the link to this tune! I hadn't heard these people before and have very much
enjoyed listening to their music. I like the sound of Double C tuning.
