Which would you go with between goat skin or calf skin.

I like calf, but this is a personal preference. Neither is better. I have high-grade and expensive calfskin heads; I like their looks and consistency. They take high tension and give me the low-sustain pop I prefer. I am not a lover of "plunk."  What sound do you seek?

I like middle of the road sound not too deep or either too keen and brash.

Probably makes not much difference then. You can go with the criteria that you like.

I prefer calf skin. I believe the original Rogers heads were all calfskin but not sure on that point.

Currently, I have two with Menzies goat skin and the rest calf and the only difference for me is their thickness. All are medium and one thin and to me, it sounds thinner than the meds.

I'd go with thin; i.e. about 0.2 mm.

I recently tried a goatskin and a calfskin.
The calfskin stabilized more quickly and sounds better to my ears.
I would always choose the calfskin again.
However, this is only a single test, and I must point out my slight weakness for high frequencies.
