Gang, I’d like to introduce you to Loppan (it means the flea in Swedish, which is often used as an affectionate nickname for small girls (yes I realize it sounds weird when explaining it)).
She’s soon 12 weeks old and we’ve had her since she was eight weeks. She’s a Barbet, which is a French water dog. I’ve often gravitated towards more independent, slightly stubborn breeds before, but with five kids at home, the youngest only one and a half and another with an Autism diagnosis, I wanted a more easily trained breed with some more “will to please” in it this time. A dog that will adapt to our lifestyle rather than we having to adapt to its.
I like to think that I know a lot about different dog breeds, but the Barbet is one breed I knew nothing about before I found this particular breeder which I was very impressed by. Both of Loppan’s parents are working therapy dogs. I’ve never met the father dog who lives in Finland, but the mother dog is pretty fantastic in my opinion. She works with her owner/breeder at a school for kids with severe ADHD and Autism. The kids totally light up and come out of their shells when she’s around. Of course her training has a lot to do with it, but her natural calming instincts has a lot to do with it as well. She just loves being around those kids.
Now to be clear, our pup is definitely NOT a therapy dog! She’s constantly biting us, trashes our house and steals everything, but I have a feeling she’s going to grow up to become an amazing family dog. She’s so cool everywhere we take her, is never frightened and absolutely loves everyone and everything she’s ever met. Not an ounce of dignity, but that’s not what we’re going for here either. ![]()
She’s definitely a hand full, but we love her to pieces.
Thanks for letting me share!
