Thank you for posting this video. it is interesting to hear Mr. Gellert say that "you never hear the West African instrument without singing." And yet, in the modern OT banjo world, there is almost no singing. Everyone wants to play fiddle tunes and do it over the scoop. Once upon a time in America, the Appalachian banjo players sang and played songs, but that tradition has faded to the point of near extinction. Clifton Hicks is trying to keep it alive, but he is in the minority.

Decades ago I heard Dan sing and play the blues on clawhammer banjo -- Bessie's "Back Water Blues." It opened my ears to the possibility, followed by hearing many others do the same -- Taj Mahal, Frank Lee, M.J. Miles, Guy Davis, et al.
But Dan was the first.
