Playing on tackhead I don't like to tune upto too high.
Please could someone recommend some alternative tunings that would work?

I have used these on a tackhead banjo,
dADF#A - open D tuning (compare to gDGBD)
dADGA - open D tuning (compare to gDGCD Sawmill)
dGDGA - double G tuning (compare to gCGCD)

If you tune to gDGCD and play at the same positions it will work. You’ll just be playing on the key of G instead of A.

What tuning do you typically use on your tackhead banjo? Are you planning on playing along with a recording or with other people?
If you want to keep your banjo tuned down and are only playing by yourself, you could simply tune the aEADE tuning down a few steps to eBEAB.

Assuming Your tackhead is fretless, place your bridge in the preferred position and get back to us with the scale length (measured from nut to bridge) and we may be able to help.

Here is what low A tuning sounds like on a wood top. Sort of a departure from banjo sounds. Venturing into guitar tones. Not very popular with banjo players.
