The main explanation for fraudulent ads still appears to be the hacking of old accounts with no activity. I am not sure how hackers are getting the information needed to hack, but could we have a system where dormant accounts are suspended pending verification? Or at least not allowed to post items for sale.  I know my idea for not allowing "new members" to post ads was not accepted, but something needs to be done, or the credibility of this site could suffer.

What about forcing accounts, which were not active for over an year, to reset their password by sending an reset link to their email?
I assume accounts get hacked when people use the same email/password combination on multiple websites and one of these get hacked.

We're pretty good at taking care of spammers who sign on as new members, but it is difficult to catch hackers who hack into dormant accounts. That takes good members letting us know something is suspicious about an ad or an answer to an ad.

As far as how they get information on hacking into accounts, some of that information is available on a member's home page, such as when they joined. If it's been many years with no activity, then that would probably be when the hackers try to hack the password or e-mail or whatever else they do to hack an account.

It's something Eric would have to handle as we mods have no authority to do anything like suspend a dormant account. I do think the idea has merit but don't know if it would be something easy to program or difficult to do. Again, Eric would have to look into that.
