This week’s tune is “My Little Home in West Virginia,” a three-part tune which comes from the playing of Ellis Hall (1893-1977), a glassblower and fiddler from Morgantown, WV. Ellis Hall recorded the tune in 1952, in the key of A. I first heard the tune played by fiddler James Bryan at an Augusta Heritage Center workshop, who played it in the key of G. The A and B parts are similar to each other, and the C part is quite distinct. Some friends have noted similarities between this tune and “Baby Ben,” and I agree that they are closely related. The tune has also been recorded by bluegrass artists, including Bill Emerson , Curly Ray Cline , and others.

A few more Recordings: Charlie Walden and friends

This was a popular tune with many fiddlers I knew when I first started playing. I'd never heard the original recording, thanks for sharing that. It brings back memories from a long time ago.

Nice choice, Jim, and nice playing.  Carl Jones sounded so pretty by slowing the tune down and playing all those interesting chords on guitar.  Is there a James Bryan fiddle version available?

This arrangement comes from the playing of Ellis Hall.  It helped to be familiar with a D chord position to get some of the notes, as well as the C chord.  Going up the neck a bit for the C part and staying there for the 29th - 33st measure made fingering easier.
