This doesn't strike me as a very dense material, in the end, for sound production, (seems like a lot of air gaps & glue). We'll probably have to wait a bit to get a variety of player feedback, & musical uploads.

Very interesting. I think doing the math to figure out how to build it would be the hardest part. The resonance would be decided mostly on what type of wood is used. The mad scientist in me is intrigued.

I dont think it was a rim build but would work OK in hardwood, I built something similar in the 1980s for a bullnose bottom stair tread.

as for banjered question, As I cant get a gourd in the UK, I am planning on building one like paper mache using multiple layers of heavy duty amazon packaging brown paper with tightbond over a party baloon

Maybe you could try an epoxy resin instead of titebond. Something with a 70/30% mix ratio and a 2 hour set time. Give it 6 layers of paper.

One could also position the saw kerfs to the inside and fill the kerf voids with tiny wedges as well. This would give the exterior pot wall a smooth finish with the interior wall presenting an interesting pattern that could be finished as is. For strength dovetail or butterfly the ends that meet and position the dovetail-butterfly at the banjo tailpiece location.
