The Eclectic Banjo - Posted - 05/21/2025: 14:57:50
Understand that the tune might go by different titles. I'm sure I could figure it out by ear but like having sheet music where available. Here is a version played on YouTube:

And tips or leads appreciated.

This notation on Taterjoe's site looks pretty close to my eye.

The Traditional Tune Archive has notation. Not sure how close it is to the video. It is attributed to a man named James Hill, first published in the 1880s.

It also exists in the Irish tradition as a hornpipe and reel.

“Pateroller” suggests a pre-1865 tune.
Gaither used the title with "pateroller," not the abbreviated version.

Yes that is the old Gaither Carlton tune. Check it out here.

It sounds like a different tune, but a great one. The bowing indicated (some of us banjo pickers are fiddle selectors too) is the classic bowing I have seen taught for Irish hornpipes; slurring from the offbeat to the on beat.

Here is a suggested simple banjo arrangement based on a beginner fiddle setting by Brittany Haas. Lilypond and midi files are embedded in the .pdf.
Enjoy,
Jean Louis
