Took me a full year to learn my first song which was called Polly (or Molly) Put the Kettle On. It had three separate parts to it. The next song is called “Ducks on the Millpond” and it only has two parts to memorize. I finally made it through the whole song start to finish at 35 bpm with no tablature and no mistakes. I estimate it was about 300 hours total to get through this one since December but I think I have every note memorized and can play it all chunked together.

We all learn in different ways. Some are more visual, kinetic, or audio. Though the years I've learned to learn using all three but it helps to know what works best for yourself. Sometimes I make up words to the tunes or even just certain passages, usually using the name of the song to help me zero in. Like the tune "Jaybird" – "Jaybird Jaybird yells and screams...." If it is a song I find it helpful to read the words as the song is being played. Different strokes for different folks. Fortunately for me I had/have more persistence than talent but 200 tunes and 200 songs later I found ways to learn. Good Luck! banjered

Good for you! Looks like you're getting better and this second song is going to be quicker to learn. Probably the next one will be easier and quicker, so you're on your way.

Once you learn a few you realize that tunes have licks and phrases in common. Then it’s just rearranging them to get the tune you want. That said I still take forever to learn new tunes. It’s the joy of the journey as they say!
