Has anyone kept an up-to-date list of the live rigs of professional banjo players? I'm specifically interested in the ones who plug in. When I was a teen, I used to spend hours looking at some website that showed the guitar rigs of different electric guitarists. It'd be cool if something like that existed for banjo.

I know Billy Failing uses a hybrid system with a clip-on mic and a Fishman magnetic pickup and has the sound-guy mix them. What are other folks using?

I know the Picky Fingers podcast goes over this a bit, but I'm not a huge podcast fan (in general -- I think it's excellent for a podcast).

For years I used a hybrid system like Failing's, ( Fishman pickup, blended with a Gold Tone clip on) because I liked moving around, (i.e. wander over to my mando player and jam, etc.). But I got tired of all the hook up stuff EVERY gig: DI, cords, mixing at the DI as well as the board, and BS,... and now perform straight into a condenser mic. Its the best sound, and my condenser is small, so I could engineer a mount for the banjo for it,... just haven't bothered (yet).

Did you have the dynamic or condenser version of the gold tone clip-on?

I've had issues with feedback when I've just used a mic. I play some less-than-ideal spaces. But the sound is so much better with a real mic.

I don't think there is the similar comparison to electric guitar realm; as the signal chain and routing (guitar, PU, pedal board, effect loop, preamp, amp, speaker/cab, micing) create significantly to shape the sound in different ways.  Understandably, curiosity of how they are shaping and getting that sound... what specific gear is needed (or why you can't get that sound)

just very different goal from most banjo or other acoustic instruments... where more about trying to capture sound natural instrument, and deal with GBF issues; and the individual instrument plays more important role; as well as the context and environment/room/stage/monitoring.
