I just bought an old open back and it came with steel strings. I'm getting ready to put some LaBella 17's on it. With this tailpiece should I just tie around the cross bar or incorporate a knot and use the slots?
Thanks.

No, tie a stopper knot in the end of the string and hook it in the notch. Then the string wraps once around the bar before going to the peghead.

That "old open back" is a Lyon & Healy.

Like Joel said. However, with the thinner strings, you may need to create a bigger stopper knot that will hold in the notches and not slip thru.

Although the bar can be used to tie the strings to, the "fingers" holding the bar in place are a tad on the weak side. If it has been previously used with steel strings, they may be further weakened. I've had ones where the fingers were cracked and bent.

The talon tailpiece on my Bay Satte is not identical to yours but I did load the strings similar to what Joel Hooks advised.  I tied a know large enough to anchor the string in the notch at the rear of the tailpiece and then wrapped the string around the talon once.

Thanks to everyone. It's a nice sounding banjo. The dowel stick could be reset but I will keep it as is for the time being.

The reason you have to tilt your bridge is because you have false strings.  Change the strings and don't "stretch" them, let the stretch slowly.

Thanks for the advice, Joel. The intonation as is works for me now, and I will remember your tip when I replace the strings.
