I upgraded to a refurbished iPhone 11 to be able to record myself on video singing and playing. Unfortunately, it seems that I need an external mic to pick up the sound well at a bit of a distance for playing back alright. My hope is also to sometimes be playing out of doors. What suggestions can people make? Thanks in advance.

I think the Shure mv-88 gets the best reviews but whether it works for your situation I couldn’t say. You can change the sensitivity which would be a plus. And at least you would have a windscreen. I have one. They’re not cheap.

Laurence,

Will the MV-88 work with the iPhone camera to make videos?  I was looking at the Zoom iQ6 and it won't according to their manual.

Thanks.

It is compatible with iPhone. That’s what I use on my videos. It’s a good idea to download the app if you get it.

Nonsense! The Zoom iQ5, iQ6 and iQ7 all work with an iPhone 11 — it has a Lightening connector. So will the original version of the Shure MV88.

None of the above work with an iPhone 15 or 16 as these have USB-C connectors. Now that I have an iPhone 16, I'm looking to sell my iQ5, iQ7 and MV88. PM me if interested in any of them.

The iQ5 and iQ7 let you monitor through headphones; the iQ5 also lets you charge your phone while using it. The MV88 does not have a headphone jack, neither does the iPhone 11.

You can always get a lightning => USB-C adapter if you want to continue using your current setup

Huh? His new iPhone 11 has a lightening connector and no headphone jack. He wants a compatible external mic. I don't see that he has a "current setup".

Again, the Zoom iQ5/6/7 mics have a headphone port and allow direct monitoring when used with the free Zoom app—the older iQ5 also allows charging through a 5V micro usb port.

The Shure MV88 was designed for older iPhones that had a headphone jack — no way to enable direct monitoring. There is a Shure kit that gets around this but it only works on Android phones. So, while the MV88 will work and sounds pretty good, you can't monitor while recording onto an iPhone 11 like I had five years ago, then a 13 Pro and now a 16 Pro.

One can always use the Apple Lightening to USB Camera Adapter (CCK) to connect a USB interface and record with external microphones. If one is looking to record with an attached microphone, an external interface kind of defeats the purpose.
