For many of us, Wade Ward represents the gold standard of authentic Old Time downpicking banjo playing from the Blue Ridge.

Please note the economy of motion with his right hand. Mr. Ward clearly plays away from the neck of the banjo, resulting in his expressive rendering of a tune. The crisp sound of Gibson RB-11 resonator banjo as he perfectly seconds the fiddler. The fine sustain of the steel strings. Supposedly, this fragment is the only actual video of Wade Ward playing despite his numerous recordings, both solo and with fiddler Charlie Higgins. He is also quite comfortable playing standing on his feet.

Geographically, at least by modern standards, Carroll County, VA is not at all far from Surrey County, NC. Yet, Wade's sound is nothing like the "Round Peak" style just over the state line.

Additionally, when Wade Ward played with Mr. Higgins, he often, though not always, played a pre-Scruggs three finger style. This recording is gold!

Having fun what was the main thing playing this music. Wade is playing clawhammer here laying down the rhythm for the young fiddler. Looks to be either Friday or Saturday evening during the band competition period.
