Wondering about the strength of vintage banjo necks. Will GDAE strings be too much for the old necks?

Almost every tenor banjo in Ireland is tuned gdae over half of them are vintage and they all have steel strings. If you’re worried about it keep the string gauges light. After saying that there are some (a few) banjos with bowed necks and cracked heels out there, so it’s your call.

GDAE tuning has less tension than CGDA tuning. I ran the numbers quickly on a 23" scale length tenor banjo and the total tension for GDAE is 62.7 pounds, CGDA is 83.1.
