Back in the 80's I was in a band, the 8th Avenue String Band, that played the festivals in California. I bought a video outfit and began taping our band as well as bands on festivals we played at. These tapes are at the YouTube channels Bubba's Music Festival Tapes and the 8th Avenue String Band. So far posted on the Bubba site are three Hot Rize sets, one Good Ole Person's set, and JD Crowe and the New South. So far I'm most proud of the JD set. I was up close and able to get great close ups of JD's playing.

Thanks for posting the link to the video. It's a great video for anyone wanting to learn some J.D. Crowe licks. The mandolin player is my old friend Terry Johnson. I believe that the guitar player is Tony King.  J.D. was still wearing his strap over his right shoulder.

Thanks everyone. I've had these tapes in a closet for30 plus years. I have a friend from my last band who learned of the tapes and has been putting them online. Soon to be added: New Grass, Doc and Merl, Tony Rice Unit, David Bromberg, and others I can't remember. The Bromberg set has a great line. David is about to bring our a very young Bela Fleck for his first festival appearance with New Grass. Bromberg, "I'm gonna bring out a banjo player. Now I know what you're thinking, but the way he plays the banjo it almost sounds like a musical instrument!"

I believe (but not 100% sure) that Crowe is playing PB-Granada #9562-10 during in this set. Always liked hearing him on a maple five.

That's great stuff. 

The fourth song (I think) Hickory Wind was stolen (by Gram Parsons)  from one of my high school classmates, Syliva Sammons.  Sylvia had written the song (she was blind) and Gram heard it somewhere locally and recorded it and took ownership as the writer.  Sylvia sued, and won, and for the settlement Gram basically paid her for the song, in which she sold him it to him and he became the writer.  Maybe not exactly how it happened but that is the gist of it.

Strawberry and Mid-Summer Festivals were always open to electric basses, as well as other instruments. I don't recall when CBA let in electric basses, but I played a stand-up non-pedal steel on our Western Swing tunes and we played CBA every other year (their limit) from 81 til we broke up in 88 and I was never allowed to play the steel. I once found a Monroe album where he had electric guitars on almost half the cuts. I sent a tape of it the CBA committee, asking if they would allow Monroe to perform at Grass Valley. They responded, "Not unless he gets rid of the electric guitars."
Glad you like the tapes. I hear Sally Van Meter has the Good Ole Persons up on her site. Cool to have Hot Rize's first California festival sets. My friend putting these up says he has New Grass and others still to go as well as more of my band for that page. I'm amazed the tape is still good, but great memories.

I enjoyed the video so much that I watched it twice.

I love me some J.D. Crowe picking. I can see his mind just a whirling as he’s playing and I always learn a thing or two (and more) by watching him.
