What is your favorite mic for Bluegrass banjo? I’ve been using an AKG P170 when playing with dedicated vocal/instrument mics. When using only 1/2 Mics I use a combination of an AKG C314 and C214.
Any suggestions or upgrades? The group I play with runs in-ears so monitor feedback is not an issue. I’m not really interested in putting a pickup in either.

The AKG P170 sounds like a great choice. I too prefer the natural sound of the condenser mics. We use the larger diaphragm at3035s or equivalent and sometimes share the mic between several players.

Audix SCX-25A, head an shoulders above anyting I've used (including Neumanns).
3 of SCX-25A is all we need for our band (apart from a bass DI)

Those new Neumann MCM114 clip-ons are pretty incredible. Significantly better than a DPA, in my opinion. Extremely detailed and realistic. Although, clip-on condensers always feel delicate and fragile to me, so only choose this if you can deal with it somewhat carefully. A poor man's version would be the Audio Technica ATM350, which is also very good and about 1/3 the price.
I currently use a Sennheiser e904 clipped on, which is more of a SM57-ish tone. Less feedback-prone and more rugged.
