Enda Scahill posted a video on Patreon recently about where to put your right hand and where to pick to get the best sound ("Three Simple Tips to improve your banjo playing"). I must be doing something incorrectly because it feels unnatural and the tone isn't great. I need to find a teacher, I guess. Practice, practice, practice.

At the risk of seeming like a stalker ?? there are several things to consider. Different body shapes and hand size can play a role in hand placement. The angle at which you hold the banjo on your lap has an impact. Ideally there should be space between your left hip and the back of the banjo (assuming a right handed player) which neutralises your picking wrist. And the angle of the neck impacts too. If the neck is too high it has an effect on the way the wrist and hand contacts the banjo.
