The musician, songwriter and sometime politician, 79, died at his ranch in Texas. According to The Washington Post, the cause was Parkinson’s Disease. Friedman was best known for writing edgy, often satirical, songs, which he performed with his band, The Texas Jewboys.

Growing up, I attended camp at Echo Hill Ranch, and I got to spend a couple of days with Kinky a few years ago. He could not have been kinder, and his creativity, wit, and passion for music were as evident as ever. RIP.

I knew about the music, the novels, and the gubernatorial run, but did y'all know that he was also a chess prodigy and a Peace Corps veteran?

Put another log on the fire,
Cook me up some bacon and some beans,
Go out to the car and change the tire,
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Baby, fill my pipe and then go fetch my slippers,
Boil me up another pot of tea.
Put another log on the fire, girl,
Come and tell me why you're leaving me.
RIP Kinky!

I used to enjoy Kinky's appearances on the Imus tv show when he was "running" for governor of Texas.

IIRC, that was Tompall Glaser--though very much in line with Kinky's sensibility. Maybe you were thinking of "Get Your Biscuits In The Oven And Your Buns In The Bed"?

Maybe he is together with the girl in the peach colored dress.
RIP Kinkster

So sad . . . I loved this character. Hoping all the cats and dogs he owned and loved in his lifetime came running to meet him, as he wrote in one memorable passage.
