Hi there, hope everyone good. I need to replace head on my Vega vintage star. I’ve never done this before and I’m confused about the ‘crown’ type I should choose? High. Medium, low etc. I can’t seem to find any information on it. Thanks. Steve

On the Deering website, under its Vega Vintage Star ad/explanation, I recently noticed the pot specifications indicate that the banjo is equipped with a 12” Renaissance, Low Crown head. Not sure whether that spec applies to all Vintage Stars, but perhaps it’s a place to start an inquiry. (I’ve found Deering to be fairly responsive to my queries re similar issues.)

Two measurements can inform the choice of the height of the head. The first is the height of the tension hoop anywhere on the hoop. The second would be the height of the tension hoop at the neck/rim joint. On some banjos, the height at this point is shorter than the rest of the tension hoop. You can also take measurements off the existing head once it is removed. If you order too short a crown height the tension hoop will sit high on the rim, and the strings of the banjo may hit the tension hoop at the neck/rim joint. If you order too long a crown height, the head may bottom out on end of the neck where it has been cut to fit the tension hoop/rim shape. I have no knowledge of this specific banjo.
