I'm out of touch [with working ... alas not with eating], but think "I'll do mucho complaining before I'll switch" will be in the vanguard.
... and, by the way, who needs grinders, when you can have bologna or bologna with onions or cheese or tomatoes or ham or etc. or etc. or ?!?!?!

For years I drove home and fixed a quick lunch so I didn't have to brown bag or spend money eating out. IF you live close enough to do that, it's a great way to eat, rest, watch a little TV if you like to do that, and then go back to work all rested and ready for the rest of the day.
My son does the same thing, only his wife has lunch ready for him when he drives up. Lucky son! My daughter usually eats out for lunch. My oldest daughter brown bags it because she lives too far away to go home at lunch and she's very picky about what she eats.
So, sounds like just about anything goes nowadays.

... the all-knowing Google tells me: "A submarine sandwich, commonly known as a sub, hoagie, hero, Italian, grinder, wedge, or a spuckie, is a type of American cold or hot sandwich made from a cylindrical bread roll split lengthwise and filled with meats, cheeses, vegetables, and condiments." [I think I'll go with wedgie ... haven't had one yet today. ]

We generally call them subs but there is a local chain called WG Grinders that brought the term to central OH - and they do make excellent sandwiches. We used to have a place close by the office called Potbelly had a favorite sandwich called A Wreck but sadly and surprisingly they closed - place was always busy and customer service was outstanding so it was a head scratcher.
But back to the original question, I really don't know what everyone else is doing but my office is 8 min from the shop so I do usually just come home and fix my own and visit my dogs.

Remember Subway's "Five Dollar Footlongs" ad? Now they are advertising $5 six-inchers. I always had a microwave at work so my brown bagging was always heating up leftovers, which is as cheap as it gets.

I quit going to Subway after I ordered a salad and when I got it, the meat was so tough you couldn't chew it enough to swallow it, the veggies were limp and lifeless. I've never been back.

What's weird about this is around here you can stand in front of them while they make it and tell them what ingredients to put in your food and if they reach for something that looks substandard, say, "no I don't want that one". That would be me if they were reaching for a tomato slice that isn't red enough to suit me. I've never gotten bad food there but I'm sure it happens.

It serves you guys right ^^ for ordering the high falutin' stuff [i.e. salads and tomatoes].
Nowadays, we pretty much only patronize Subway when we have a coupon, and for this advocate of KISS it's the foot-long "Classic" steak and cheese ... with a "sprinkle of the hotter (?) peppers and as much onion as the boss will allow you to put on." [On occasion I've had to observe that the boss must be a real cheapskate, but in the end, "all's well that ends well." ]

While I still keep an office downtown, nowadays I often go home at lunchtime, eat, and don't come back to the office. When I stay longer at the office, I often do not eat. That counters the expense of when I do eat lunch. I may go through a salad bar a block away, or get a slice of pizza across the street.
Observations of others in the building: I often detect food smells in the hallways-as lunchtime nears, likely coming from crockpots in offices. I believe staffers take turns bring a crockpot meal to feed their co-workers. Otherwise I see a lot of plastic grocery bags with plastic containers of lunch inside.

Packed lunches never went out of fashion over here. And they are never packed in brown bags..

If you are going to take you lunch in a brown bag, you also should wrap your sandwich with folded wax paper. Same with your pickle. ;-) Brad

I took a homemade salad (and homemade dressing) to work for years. Healthy, cheap, easy... why not?
As for long sandwiches of various names, I make my own from time to time. On homemade bread, with 5W30 balsamic vinegar.
