There was another discussion about AI backup... besides all this AI, ChatGPT, Copilot... I have hearing more about all this AI music stuff, and esp this Udio beta version, just released a few weeks ago, (as well as the Suno app). A few content providers like Adam Neely, did some recent takes and perspectives. Curious as to the latest where AI music, including banjo related music; and where is this going?

If curious might play around with recent free AI apps... udio and suno. You essentially type in prompts describing what after.... might include subject matter, genre, style, mood, tempo, instruments,  type of voice, (yes it will even do vocals). You can have it write the lyrics, or put in your own; and in few minutes it will create a few options from your tag/prompts to some completely finished studio end product, melody, rhythm backup, leads, and lead and harmony vocals. Can take that hone, tweak and/or extend, define intro/outro, breaks, phrasing, verse/chorus, and such, to give more options. Unfortunately, can't much control get too specific with entering in melody or chords.

Here what came out after a few minutes, just asked udio to make cajun song about whiskey, with fiddle and diatonic accordion. Bayou Spirits

It created everything you hear, not just compose lyrics/melody, but the whole studio aspect playing, recording, mixed final product sound file in few minutes. Thought I'd have it generate a banjo tune Harvest Reel. Someone else figured out to have it do a cover. Don't Think Twice by the Chicksy Dicks

Similar also tried Suno, I typed in a Bluegrass song about doors coming off airplane here are 2 quick snippets it made. Doors Wide Open 1  and Doors Wide Open 2 and a old-time promt suno.com/song/dc574102-8a64-49...c78bdadf8

I was just curious, these are not even the best examples, just what I quickly did. When listening to some other genre folks made, (esp classical/film) it did IMO a better job, just curios how would do with more trad acoustic music. Thought udio did somewhat better on sound. You can go to their we site see what others made, and can search for tags like genre.

While not going to be songs folks want to play... or buy as active listener... or replace as far as joy of playing, live. It's not really anything I would use. Overall I'm not really concerned as far as most of us in banjo world. But as background to commercial, documentary, film, ambient... for folks that earn some of their pay as professional studio, maybe should pay attention. I can absolutely see some folks with business degrees in tall buildings, it's already good enough for their purpose... and cheaper and easier.

BTW, related to Red Lobster topic... apparently recent Red Lobster ad was all AI

Some instruments are better than others. Basic drumming, strumming, and guitar type picking patterns are pretty much on point and it will be very soon that we can't distinguish them from real. But it hasn't quite figured out the actual banjo syncopated rolls yet, it's immediately recognizable that it's synthetic. I'm sure it'll get better soon.

Imagine this AI audio tech, combined with AI video generation tech, and put into a streaming service such as nugs.net. Combine that with VR and you have a situation where a person could realistically experience classic concerts from any time period. Imagine watching Flatt & Scruggs at Carnegie Hall, not just in TV but in full virtual reality with 3D surround sound sitting in the box seats, from the comfort of their own living room.

The applications are endless if you use your imagination. The educational opportunities alone, allowing people to experience things rather than reading them from a book or watching a video, are staggering if applied correctly.

I heard the first bits of AI-generated bluegrass a few weeks ago when Suno was made public. Pretty impressive, if you ask me. We are definitely nearing a new age, AI is going to change the world in a lot of ways we still cannot foresee.

To me, ultimately this highlights the difference between a higher level of real inspiration in art versus copying and mixing things with great proficiency. That is why someone gifted to be open to such inspiration, someone capable of producing profoundly meaningful musical works of art through God-given talent and efforts, someone like Beethoven, is artistically and spiritually invaluable and irreplaceable by technology...
