My first good open back banjo was a Bart Reiter with 11” maple pot and brass tone ring. A star on peg head, dot fret markers. It is in very good condition. I bought it used in about 2003-ish. As I recall it was at least several years old then. I will include a lower price HS black case. I plan to sell it to a friend who plays bluegrass style banjos. I am curious of a fair and friendly price to settle on? I have not kept up on banjo values for years. What say you? Brad

Brad,

Do you have a Maple Special or possibly a Bart Reiter Regent?

Pictures would help us to identify the model...and therefore, an appropriate price for you to ask.

The Regent has an Electric-style scalloped tone ring. You seem to have a Special. I’d say a friendly price would be in the $1,250-$1,400 range.

I am pretty sure it is the Special. The tone ring is a round wire as I recall. I put a hooped real skin head on it, but still have the fiberskyn hooped head iI got it with.
It’s time to reduce inventory form my BAS days. Brad

Yeah, you won’t find a Reiter Special for that sub-$1500 price. A quick browse shows them closer to $1900+

Selling to a good friend?

I'd want to be right around

$1000.

Good luck.

Similar one for sale near me for $1300 (not friend) if that helps.

I agree with Mark. That you're selling to a close friend makes a personal difference.

I sold a Bart Reiter to my best mate a few years ago and didn't ask for what I could've got if advertised. Just fair and friendly. He loves that banjo and to this day it's his cherished main player. We played together last night so I get to hear it regularly. You can't put a price on that.

When I first read your post I figured around $1000 too. Bart's retirement has probably pushed up the prices of his used banjos some. But that to me is a fair and friendly deal. I suggest you let your close friend try the banjo at his leisure so there's no doubt that he wants it before you talk money. smiley

Though he is more an "acquaintance" than  a "good friend", perhaps a friend.  Even though we don't socialize together, we have familiar hangs, and musical interests.  I would have no problem loaning it to him to take home and pick a while first.  I know where to find him. ;-)   One less banjo case to dust or stubb my toe on, eh.  Brad

$1000+. The hard case adds some value.

My children get to fight over mine. Unfortunately, none of them play

"You take it."

"No, You take it."

I hope to live long enough to teach grandchildren to appreciate my fine instruments. i consider my Reiter Vegaphone conversion to be an heirloom quality instrument.
