Hey, All... I was set on getting the PZ Pro and found out that Matt Menefee (now w/ Mumford & Sons) uses the Tonedexter 2. Does anyone here have experience using both? I was going to use a DPA 4099 condenser and an LR Baggs bridge Piezo w/ the PZ Pro, looking to get a pure warm sound and a processed sound. Looks like the Tonedexter might accomplish both. Both have tons of great options. Any opinions are appreciated (I play a Wildwood Paragon w/ a lower tuned drum head, going for a warm sound w/ less high end). AJA

The Audio Sprockets Tonedexter, is especially easy to accomplish what you are wanting to do. I have used both, but I have not gotten my hands on the 2nd Gen, with its new display. I've used the Radial unit in the past, it is a workhorse and road worthy piece of equipment. Nothing but praises to Radial's quality, However you sound like you are wanting to do more than that unit is capable of. The Tonedexter unit allows the training of your presets and plenty of Headroom when playing other percussion/electrics, etc. Your not limited to two settings, and once your set you don't run the risk of feedback, etc. While Audio Sprockets has been delayed from Covid shortage of components, I started using an HX Stomp (line6 Helix series) unit to make IR's to use for stage. Basically doing what the Tonedexter did, but adding some addle' control, more storage and many more options to manipulate sound. It can get quite expensive, but stability, ease of sound check and consistent sound make it a worthwhile option. But your Tonedexter will work as your Pre and processor, so you can ditch the DI and PZ Pro, in your pedal chain. Best of luck with your choices.

Wow! Great advice; thanks so much. I tend to play with lots of dynamics (and play my dreadnought about as hard as anyone, with finger picks, flat picks, and just fingers). After watching all those Tonedexter videos I can now hear how tinny my guitar pickup sounds. Just seems like an amazing piece of gear, almost like it's sampling all those mic setups and then getting pretty damn close to replicating it. Have you used the Midi capability (something I've never messed with)? Doesn't that make the processing abilities almost limitless (I wouldn't know)? I've got one odd song that just needs something different, and having a lot of sustain and a slight bit of something or other might be just the thing. What kind of pickups do you use on your banjo?

Aja, I haven't used the midi feature, and haven't come acrosss a situation/recording event, where I've needed it. All my instruments have several different presets programmed into my Tonedexter, If I need a pedal effect there is a effect loop on the unit. James May over at Audio Sprockets is very accessible, you should contact them if you have a specific question. I'm sure the Rock&Roll guys would be using the Midi functions more often. Typically I'm using the unit to produce the cleanest Acoustic sound, with little or no Feedback problems, All the volume/gain I want and to be on par with any Electric instruments or Percussion. I can play as comfortably as I feel, and I'm not producing an "electrified Banjo/guitar sound", but a clear Acoustic sonically correct Banjo sound. As far as pickups, I went back to a K&K style piezo when going to the Tonedexter and the HX Stomp units. It can dampen you Banjo's resonance, but gets the best signal for how this unit works. Plus it is the cheapest option compared to all these other ones available.
Best of luck, sounds like your on the right track.
