Watched a film last night, Absolution (1978). Billed as a thriller it owes more than a nod to folk horror. I enjoyed it and was primed to do so by the music over the opening titles, 5 string banjo played (what I am convinced was) Little Sadie (no vocals.) However, the info only cites Shady Grove. Shady Grove is sung, without accompaniment, during the film. I play both songs (fairly simple versions) and obviously note wise they are similar but I was left doubting myself. Was the title, and it turns out, closing song Little Sadie or a version of Shady Grove? Is there a version of Shady Grove that is similar to Little Sadie or do I just not know as much as I think I do? TRIGGER WARNING There is some terrible banjo abuse during the film!

That's Billy Connolly riding in on the motorbike at the beginning, probably him playing the banjo as well, he's an awesome player.

Apparently Billy Connolly's first film appearance. Good quiz question , Richard Burton and Billy Connolly in the same film. It's a slow burn but worth it for the payoff. Watch out for the bit where the police get him in the woods, BANJO ABUSE. I hope they didn't actually do it to a live banjo but fear they probably did.
