The tune of the week this week is, A Riverboat’s Gone, an original waltz by Canadian fiddler April Verch, written as a tribute to John Hartford. I was introduced to this tune by NH fiddler Shana Aisenberg and fell in love with it along with the rest of Ms. Verch’s music. If you are not familiar with her music, check it out. She and Joe Newbury have recorded at least one album together and have a number of videos out that I enjoyed discovering.

Hands down the best video I've seen in a long time. Aside from the adorable factor, there's some serious talent going on there! I love the black dog cameo toward the end, too. Well played, kiddos! ![]()

Damn but that was cute! And impressive! My goal of becoming a prodigy before I am 90 seems less likely than ever! banjered

Your tune choice is quite exciting, Bill. Thanks for your performance and tab. I ended up using the cello banjo tuned to be in the key of D, but lowered the fourth string to hit the very bottom G note. The range of the tune is a full two octaves. Though we don't need to imitate the fiddle so precisely, the challenge of it is fun.
Thanks also for including April Verch in our TOTW discussions. Seeing her vibrant fiddling is a treat, along with the legendaries Joe Newberry and Mike Compton accompanying her. Some may not know Mike was in the John Hartford String Band and he would have been especially moved by April's new tune. The talented youngsters playing in the video must have April as their remarkable inspiration!

Superb tune in 3/4. I am flabbergasted by the kid's rendition: full of feeling and smiles.
Great tune.

Janet, that sounded wonderful on the cello banjo. You may notice that I had to jump octaves since I didn't have access to the low notes in double DD. I did work out an up the neck rendition in drop C, capo 2, but I settled on the D tuning for playing with the fiddle. Since learning this tune, I have become a real fan of Ms. Verch. She is popular in New England, as are Canadian dance tunes in general.
