For many years the clawhammer banjoist extraordinaire Michal J. Miles has been blazing new musical trails through a wide array of genres beyond the traditional old-time repertoire: blues, Latin, jazz, and classical, as well as his own compositions, which reflect his diverse influences that run from Bach to Brubeck. His latest CD, "American Bach Revisited," scheduled for release on August 4th, is a new take on J.S.B.'s monumental Cello Suites I and III, which Michael first recorded back in 1997. These are not simplified arrangements, but rather note-for-note transcriptions of Bach's complex scores, performed with outstanding taste and musicianship on clawhammer banjo, accompanied by Jill Kaeding on cello. In addition, the CD features Michael's own "Chicago Suite," a lively, five-movement composition that captures the energy and excitement of his native city's streets and alleys.
In past issues of Banjo NewsLetter (cf, banjonews.com) I have reviewed two other CDs of Michael's, as well as five of his books -- instructional; tabs of Bach's music and his own; and collections of song arrangements -- all highly recommended and available on his website, MilesMusic.org.
All five-string pickers would do well to familiarize themselves with the outstanding work of Michael J. Miles, a man who can arguably be considered today's best and most versatile practitioner of clawhammer style banjo.
