Have to admit I never listened to much of Sonny's work, but if these bits are representative of his style, then I really missed a lot. Each of the three solos includes sounds I would have loved to have made back when I was first learning in the '70s.



Except for a bit of single-string work in one solo, everything here is accomplished with rolls, showing how imaginative Sonny was in finding ways to make interesting and advanced music with relatively easy right-hand patterns. Those ascending and descending passages in the middle solo are amazing.



A wonderful lesson.
