hi folks,

I’m visiting Newfoundland near St John’s (Bareneed) for 2 months this April and May. I was wondering if there’s interesting old-time banjo in the area? Gigs / open mic or would be amazing to get lessons.

I am a real beginner only learning this year, but really love it, and will be bringing my banjo !

Thanks loads for any tips !

I’m learning clawhammer with a great tutor here ( N England)

Alison I can't answer your question: my St. John's friend moved to Germany several years ago, so would not be current on the music scene. Sorry.

But, I did want to mention that one of my favorite UK authors, Ben Aaronovitch, included Glossop in his latest Peter Grant, wizard book (aka Rivers of London series): Amongst Our Weapons. Ben is one of the most interesting fiction authors I've read in the past 50 years :-).

Remember to loosen the strings and lay down the bridge when you are transporting your banjo.

Best wishes for your trip and your banjo progress :-)

See if you can track down Neil Rosenberg. He might be able to set you on track.

Hi, thank you loads for your thoughts, and sorry for delayed reply! Long Newfoundland settling in process.
Bill thank you I will for sure. My landlady here knows another of the folklore professors, v interesting.
Martin that’s so interesting, I’ll definitely look him up. Glossop is really quite a small countryside place to be noticed… also thank you for the transport advice, I did that and my banjo arrived intact, also padded with many socks !
