It's Hedy West singing Sheffield Apprentice.


I can pick out the melody instrumentals by ear, well close to it. But when she plays rhythm and sings the verses, I'm totally lost. Can someone tell me what going on there? What are the chords?. what's the strum technique?

Does anyone know the tuning?

Hedy does a wonderful rendition on that one. Sounds like basic modal tuning and clawhammer. Reminds me of Joan Baez's "Jackaro." Most folk songs are not tabbed out. This one sounds like a good one to learn how to tab out, it is not that complicated. I know 200+ folk songs and out of necessity I have had to learn how to come up with a CH version, either just ear or sometimes I find it helpful to tab out (Hills of Mexico, Days of 49 etc.). One tip is to just use your thumb and nothing else to find the melody notes. Have fun! banjered

This web site has the chords for the tune in the key of G# -( G# - B - F# - D#) . If I tune my banjo to G# by lowering the 2nd string to Bb (gDGBbD) and potting the capo at the 1st fret, I can find all of the melody notes.

But it's G#m not a G#.
I think it's Gm tuning - standard G with the 2nd string dropped a semitone to Bb - capoed or tuned up a semitone to G#m. At least it plays along pretty nicely in that tuning.

Should I capo the 5th string? I figured out part of the tune in that tuning. I was playing another pretty Polly in that tuning, and from there noticed I could play Sheffield Apprentice easily.
