What the heck is a Pine Siskin (You might ask)
Other than being this week's Tune of the Week, you should know that it's a small bird.
It's a member of the finch family that looks somewhat like a sparrow. More info on the bird Here
"Little Pine Siskin" is an old-timey fiddle tune written by mandolinist John Reischman. He first recorded it on the album "Walk Along John".
I have found three versions that illustrate how it sounds on the banjo while played with three different techniques:
On the original version, John plays with the Jaybirds . Nick Hornbuckle plays banjo in two-finger style.
Clawhammer Version John is playing with the Sweet Lowdown. I believe the banjo player is

We can always count on you, Pat, to bring us an enjoyable tune and play it for our enjoyment as well. It was also a treat to hear Nick Hornbuckle's banjo.
I chose, as I often do, to avoid the up-the-neck arrangement and found that the cello banjo let me play John Reischman's beautiful Little Pine Siskin in the key of D, equivalent to open G tuning, tuned down four steps without going higher than the 5th fret. It's not that I can't go up the neck, but it's usually easier for me to stay down the neck. I listened to several versions, all with John, and settled on a melody which also blended with the fiddler in the CD Walk Along John. I played the cello banjo along with your recording and most happily we were right in sync.
Coincidentally, you posted on my birthday and the present I received yesterday was a bird feeder. Here's the shot I got of the first visitor -- a finch.
