I have really enjoyed listening through all the tracks of Mr. Vorvick's "Nameless Joe" album.

The tunes -- 22 in all -- are all original compositions of Mr. Vorvick. The entire work is performed solo on clawhammer-style banjo, just the banjo. His playing has a crisp, sweet, sure touch, very articulate. His technique also employs a consistent percussive element on the banjo head to good effect, almost like a backing track. The overall effect is engaging and entrancing.

The tunes work both individually and as an entirety of the whole set. In fact, I feel the listening experience may even be best in just letting the album play through, from song to song to song. (And there's probably not a whole lot of clawhammer banjo sets we could say that about!)

For me some of the standout tracks include "Rogue'n Rye", "Mourning Dove", "Nameless Joe", "McKay Creek", "Ragdoll Dance", "When I Found Mercy", and "Winter's Call".

The tunes aren't completely in the realm of "old-time", nor are they intended to be. They are original compositions. Yet fully draw upon all the technique, tunings, and melodic vocabulary of old-time. I believe Mr. Vorvick has found a perfect balance, taking the traditions of the Appalachian south and elaborating upon them just a tiny bit, to better fit the aesthetic sensibilities of the Pacific northwest.

Mr. Vorvick has published a complete set of tablature for his album in the accompanying book. This book is on another level of excellence from the usual set of tabs. Very well produced, illustrated with photographs, supplemented with background information. It's a work of art on it's own.
