I just got word that Art Rosenbaum passed away last night. He was very influential in the early days of the revival. He collected extensive field recordings and occasionally recorded himself. First an LP with Al Murphy and later solo recordings. His field recordings are collected in two box sets put out on the Dust-to-Digital label. He wrote several great books on old time banjo providing important information for those wanting to learn old time clawhammer styles and two and three-finger styles. He loved sea shanties as well.

He was an art professor who had retired from the University of Georgia. His art was distinctive and had a wonderful character, much like the man himself. Another old time voice is silenced and we are poorer for that. His legacy is rich and a resource for all who want to learn more about the world of old time music, not just banjo. Rest in peace Art, the jams just got better on the other side.

Sad to hear. He was a very big influence on me back when. I would wear out tracks on vinyl albums trying to figure out phrases. Learned a lot of songs from his albums.

Great artist. His paintings and music will live on here. He gets to join the great ones in the land above.

His family and friends can console themselves with the fact that he left a lasting legacy in three different fields with his picking, his writing and his artworks. How many people can you think of that would qualify for that distinction?

Oh no...huge influence on banjo playing, documentary work, painting. He taught at U. of Georgia School of Art for years. He and his wife Margo were a true, loving team that recorded and interpreted the glue and community that makes us human...very sad news.

I spent a lot of time listening to his LP's in days gone by.

Rest in peace, Art -- musician, artist, teacher. His book documenting so many tunings from so many older players is unique. Last saw him (sitting with John Cohen) at the Brooklyn Folk Festival about 5 years ago.
