So, I’ve been messing around with acoustic guitar and found that several artists actually perform playing guitar in the clawhammer style. Thinking this would open up a whole bunch of tunes, I tuned my 000-18 up to GGDGBD and tried it….sounds pretty cool! At least for a banjo player.
I’m wondering if anyone here has their guitar set up for clawhammer and how do you tune? Do you keep the thick e string and just crank it up or replace it with a something like another a string or even the 4th g string?

I have a guitar that can be strung with a short 6th string through a tunnel in the neck. Plays like a 6 string banjo. It’s fun. Can also change the nut and string it like a normal guitar. I have a tenor guitar that I also mess around with clawhammer. Probably play it more. Ukes are also great played clawhammer

A number of years ago I met a guitarist who played clawhammer, in standard tuning. He uses Alaska picks.

Hi Mike, et al...I don't play a lot of guitar...but over the years there have been several times where I picked up a guitar and no pick was available to me...so I just played it in clawhammer fashion...I found it more than a little amusing when Ms. Tuttle became all the rage because she started doing that...as tho no one else ever had...I used only standard guitar tuning
