In my younger days - Taj Mahal would often perform along with others in summer concert season. I got to see him with Van Morrison - Dr. John - I can't exactly remember who else but several times. Sometimes he'd even just show up in a club unexpectedly.
When COVID hit I was sure I'd never see him again.
And then he was on the schedule out my way... but it was too good to be true - my husband had to reschedule a trip out of town :(
Then late this afternoon I just said "what the heck..." and checked - there were still tickets - I went to a show alone for the first time in 20 years. And I will never be shy again - I wouldn't have known what I missed I guess - but now I know that had I chickened out, I would have missed it.
He didn't play an awful lot of banjo - but what he did was great.
And what he played on ukulele was great.
And what he played on keyboard was great.
And what he played on guitar.... well even alone it was hard to sit.

Taj is great. I did not notice that every time he picked up the banjo he got a good reaction from the crowd.

He always attracted good crowds. When I was volunteer staff for the Mariposa Folk Festival in Toronto, we had him at the Festival, in an open-air concert at Harbourfront, and indoors at Mariposa Mainland at Harbourfront. I got to photograph him that last time. Big hat, big guitar.

Great story Heady.
I don't get to tell this story very often because my wife rolls her eyes so this might be my last chance.
In 1969, after Taj Mahal released the double disk Giant Step (electric)/De Ole Folks at Home (acoustic) album. I got a call from my roommate's girlfriend asking if I wanted to meet her old U. Mass college buddy, Taj Mahal. I walked a few blocks and met them at a cafe. He was like anyone's old buddy — old stories and lots of laughs. Then we walked back to my apartment and he played Colored Aristocracy on my 1920 Tubaphone. He loved the banjo; I thought he was going to tear it apart. Spent the rest of the week getting the tune right. Never gonna sell that banjo.
