Went to browse at a local antique store. Thought I might find an interesting bottle or two. I recently started making terrariums from native plants I find on walks.

On the way in to browse I said to my wife, "You know, I never see any cool banjos at these places."

Ten minutes later ...

Thought I’d go back and take a critical look.
It has some condition issues that may make that price a bit too steep.

Looks to be mostly original.

I went back today.

The banjo is in pretty bad shape.

The neck is twisted.

The pot is out of round. 10-1/2 inch by 9-3/4 inch.

The fretboard is deeply grooved and deteriorating. Someone slathered a thick layer of black paint(?) on it in an attempt to reconstitute it.

Two of the tuners barely turn and the fifth slips.

Other minor issues exist.

I had to take a pass … sad.

Always happy to see a 9th fret marker.

It's probably worth $400 at least. Looks like it was made in Chicago 1880s-1890s.

its an antique store you can usually make an offer at aplace like that, i had a booth at one, they usually take 10% off just asking, and will always call a vendor with an offer.
