The movie, "The Mountain Minor," features fiddler Dan Gellert in the lead role as Charlie Abner and features a cast of great old-time musicians. The film tells the story of an Eastern Kentucky family forced to leave the family farm to find work in Ohio during the Great Depression. The real star of the movie is the great soundtrack of old-time Appalachian music in a celebration of its history and tradition. The Mountain Minor is available on Amazon Prime.

It’s a great movie. The director thought it would be easier to teach musicians to act rather than teach actors to play music. Which makes for a great sound track.
The Tillers are also part of the sound track. A great band from Cincinnati. Definitely worth a watch.

I saw The Tillers at the John Hartford memorial camp/fest in Indiana last year. It quickly occurred to me that they must be the band from The Mountain Minor.

The film is a recommended watch. I saw it in person when John was doing showings in early 2020. I’ve easily watched it an additional 3-4 time. I can’t see anyone who would venture to this part of the hangout not enjoying the experience.

I watched the movie last night. It is a great movie, easy to see why it won several awards. I think the director's decision to cast musicians and teach them how to act rather than casting actors and teaching them how to play music really sets the tone of the movie around the music.

And it was a pleasure watching old time music hero Dan Gellert. Musicians are performers, so the director's logic made a lot of sense.

It was a pleasant surprise. The first thought I had--are they really playing music? It was evident very quickly that the music was authentic. I even teared up at the final scene.

My wife and I watched the movie last night and we both enjoyed it.  Outstanding!    Thanks for posting about it on the BHO, Bill.

After watching it, I went downstairs and played my fiddle

Thanks for letting us know about this movie Bill. I watched it yesterday. I love movies about simpler times, especially if old time music is in it.
My dads side of the family is from Rockcastle county, on the west side of Jackson county.
