doesn’t get the publicity he deserves. He’s been playing astonishing clawhammer for decades and has won the Clifftop contest. Yet he gets little mention when top players are discussed. He has a number of YouTube videos. Here’s one from 1989.

Bill. I think you are right. I like the series of Youtube videos that include this one of Tim Bing:

He gets a lot of music out of five strings . . .
Take care,
Lew

I've known Tim for quite a while and he is one of the best banjo players out there.

I spent a week being taught by Tim near Marlinton, WV.
Nothing beats being up close in person to get the full effect of a player’s talent. I can’t comment on if or why he doesn’t get the credit he is due. That’s beyond my knowledge. Maybe not everyone wants or seeks a profile? Some people are born pushy self-publicists and yearn for renown, some folks can't be arsed, they simply enjoy playing with their buddies.
All I can say is that he gets full credit from me for being an exceptionally good banjo player who is steeped in his regional music, that of the Hammons family in particular, and generously passes that on to other interested folks.

Wow, great job on a very notey Irish tune, which he plays very banjoistically without loosing the 5th string rhythm.

I have a wonderful record of his brother Dave Bing with Dwight Diller. I see I must nab one of Tim Bing's recordings.

Here's a video of Trevor Hammons, grandson of Lee Hammons: youtube.com/watch?v=2w0xonWPr6s
From what he says in the video, he learned a lot of technique and repertoire from Tim Bing.
